Step back in time and get your depression burger. I say this, because they are made how they were during that time period. The ladies that were working on the day I visited were nice as they could be and happy to help. The fries were good, but I wasn't a fan of the burger. Now that is not to say that it was bad, because it wasn't. It just wasn't my cup of tea.
Penn's serves the most delicious cheeseburgers I've ever had. They use a Depression Era recipe which includes breading mixed with ground beef. I recommend getting minimal toppings so you can get a real taste of the burger patty itself. The onion rings are also delicious. Their prices are very reasonable. I don't make it to Decatur very often. When I do, I go by Penn's and buy a bunch of single patties to bring home and freeze for later. I don't know how anyone could rate this place as 1 star. Definitely go check it out. It's unlike any other burger place out there.
I just started working in Decatur a few wks ago. I had seen the C.F. Penn sign and thought these bugers will be old school fantastic. Nope...Theee worst hamburger or rather double cheese burger I EVER had. Ever!!! The texture is weird/gross, the onion rings were tasty, but I didn't go there for onion rings. Yuck, just YUCK!😬😩🤔👎
I am not happy to post this. I’ve been eating CF Penn burgers since the 70s. Since they moved from their old Moulton St. location, they are not nearly as good as they used to be. These burgers have always used heavy amounts of filler, but the raw patties used to be pink before they were cooked...now they are white. Is there actually beef in there at all anymore? Also, they tend to be undercooked (raw and mushy in the middle) more often than not in my experience. If you ask for “extra crispy”, you get them about the doneness level they are supposed to be. Haven’t come away pleased in quite a while. I guess I should just stop going there.
I have been eating Penn’s cheeseburgers my entire life. My grandma used to bring me here as a child. Now, anytime I can get to Decatur before they close, I try to stop and get one. The burgers are awesome! You do need to know what you’re getting before you order it, or you might be confused. They serve what is called a “slug” burger. Originally named that because when they opened, the burgers cost a nickel. These burgers are from an era where times were hard, so “fillers” like bread crumbs were used in the patties to make the meat feed more people. The burgers are also deep fried. I love to get mine “all the way” which means with mustard and onions. Everyone should try them at least once.
