El Tejavan I -40 West + Paramount

My wife and I have enjoyed lunches and dinner at this western-central location for as long as it’s been open (20 years maybe?) but I’ve never taken breakfast here. I partook of the finest Mexican breakfast I’ve yet had in Amarillo. The chilaquiles with guisado (red stewed beef) and huevos (scrambled.) From the quality of ingredients, the homemade tastes, the presentation and the portions, the breakfast was scrumptious. Service was excellent, coffee was good, hot and refilled. The chips are not my favorite (no salt, don’t taste freshly fried) and the salsa thin but stinging hot.

The combo fajitas of chicken and shrimp are super good and juicy…the portion size is great!! First time here definitely will come back. The caldo de res is super good and if you’re wanting breakfast they have it all day on Saturdays

Came in from out of town and asked the hotel receptionist where we can get good authentic food, she recommended this place and it did not disappoint! The rice and beans were full of flavor, the burritos were on point so were the tacos. I think we found a new favorite spot to eat next time we are in town! The food is usually pretty good. My problem is with the take out burritos. They cost $7.00 Sometimes the potatoes are hard. They are different sizes. I came in Saturday got 2 breakfast burritos. They were good. I went in on Monday, ordered the same burrito. But when I opened the bag, the single burrito was barely taco size. I tried to ask the hostess that brought out the bag. She replied that the eggs were probably smaller. 😳 I ordered without eggs..of course the burrito was mostly tortilla. I had stopped going there exactly for this reason. I hate being cheated. The burrito was nearly half the size. A $7.00 burrito shouldn't lay flat in the bottom of the bag.

I eat here often and love introducing out or towners and new residents. It’s my favorite Mexican food. The hot sauce (salsa) is my favorite! The tomatillo sauce is great with any of the meats. It’s not traditional Tex-Mex. If you are looking for Tex Mex I recommended the fajitas, high quality chicken and beef. My favorite entree is carne asada (in the photo)! I also like asada tacos with onions, cilantro and queso fresco. Cheese enchiladas are wonderful too (they use the same queso fresco). For breakfast the carne asada with chilaquiles is the best. The flour tortillas are thin, soft and really big. Also try the fresh chunky guacamole! The food is always consistent and it’s always clean.
