Goten of Japan

Just fantastic. Great drinks. Food is just lights out. Sushi and sashimi and steak and fried ice cream. Excellence all that way. We had several courses, sushi and chicken tenders to start, then bigger entrees of sashimi and hibachi from the dinner menu. We did not do the live cooking experience but it looked fun. I just don’t do the catch food in my mouth thing. It’s cool, tho. You guys can all do it. So go to this place, it’s great and it’s super delicious.

The dragon roll was really good, super flavorful and perfectly balanced with a nice crunch from the shrimp tempura. The chicken karaage was crispy, juicy, and not greasy at all. Everything tasted fresh and well made, and the price was AMAZING for the quality. I’d definitely order both again!!

I wanted to just share my own personal experience from tonight (12 July, 2025). I am hard of hearing and I just had to say that our chef, Manny, was incredibly accommodating and made sure that I was able to maintain eye contact with him and hear him when he spoke to me. He is truly one of the most generous and kindest chefs I have ever met. It is rarely ever a person who does their best to accommodate my physical and hearing disabilities, so words can never express how grateful I am for this man. The food he made was absolutely exceptional and tasted absolutely divine, I haven’t eaten this much in quite a long time. This is the third time I’ve ever been to this restaurant and I would go again and again.

Goten of Japan is an absolute gem in Sunderland if you’re looking for a memorable dining experience with cultural flair and incredible food. We visited to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday, and from the moment we arrived (right as they opened), the atmosphere was welcoming and full of energy. While waiting for a hibachi table, we started with some amazing fusion sushi, fresh sashimi, and delicious cocktails. The flavors were bold, fresh, and creative—each bite felt like a flavor explosion. Once we were seated at the hibachi, the show began—and it was unforgettable. The chef was talented and entertaining, creating a fun and lively experience while preparing our meal to perfection. The hibachi dishes were flavorful, well-portioned, and cooked with precision. Me and my Wife have been coming here for years. We made reservations for Valentines day and when we arrived I have never seen the place so busy. Our chef was very kind, engaging and worked great with the kids at the table who had a birthday. He was clearly tired, stressed out and doing his best. He is probably the eldest Chef in the establishment and was the last guy working as we left. Even though we had some issues with the food, I wish I could give him a hug and thank him. I've always loved coming here and would recommend going here to anyone.
