Greek Islands Taverna

The Greek Islands is a cozy Greek restaurant located in Fort Lauderdale right off of Oakland Park and A1A. This restaurant is a staple in Fort Lauderdale and is totally worth experiencing. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable. The parking can be a challenge, but they do offer valet. To avoid a long wait, as they do not offer reservations, we went for lunch and we were able to get a table right away. Once we were seated, we were provided with a complementary serving of hummus and bread. We then ordered the pikilia appetizer which includes a sampler of all of the different types of dips served with warm pita. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the entire world. It packs out early. We had the smelts (tasty with only the generous lemon wedges squeezed all over them) , 1/2 roasted chicken and lamb chops. The Greek potatoes and yahni were so delicious. Some of the best I've ever had. My lamb chops were cooked to perfection (medium rare). We went for an early dinner just after 4pm. By the time we left around 5:30, every seat was full. Delicious rosé by the glass, and a red for the chops. My pre-dinner dry gin Martini was full to the brim of a large glass.

I took my family here and it was the best decision I made. The food was subpar! Very flavorful/delicious/fresh. We ordered the octopus, calamari, spanakopita as appetizers. Lunch we got the gyro. They cut the pita in pieces, you have the gyro on top with the red onions, tomato and tzatziki sauce on side. You basically have to make it into a taco. Dessert we got the baklava cheesecake and chocolate cake. I couldn’t decide which one was my favorite. Also, the dirty martini was a good choice too! Our waiter was kind & attentive. Great Greek Taverna food. Feels like ke a big family gathering. We visited every year when we migrate from NYC. Reservations are highly recommended otherwise you wait in line for a while.

The restaurant has its own parking lot, an outdoor patio, an inside patio, dining room and a large bar area with seating. We arrived at 4pm and by 4:45 pm, people were already waiting for tables if they had no reservation. We sat at the outside patio (which filled up). Some people were afraid to eat there because of the 2 large blizzards overhead (see photos). They provide complimentary serving of hummus with white and whole grains bread. The octopus appetizer ($24) was butter soft but unfortunately it was very salty which greatly detracted from the dish. The whole yellowtail snapper was excellent. It came with a sude of rice and a sude of cooked vegetables. Service to the patio had service gaps and various servers attended to it which detracted from smooth service.
