Harps Food Stores

I liked it better when it was Cravens. It’s never had a really good produce section, but it seems the quality has gone down some. The meat section has become unaffordable. We travel to the Walmart in Clinton. Don’t buy a box of catfish filets at Harps. Walmart has much better fillets, for cheaper. Craven’s Red Argentine shrimp was usually $18.99 for a 2 lb bag. They would often run it on sale for $15.99. Now, Harps has it for $21.99, but sometimes you can catch it for $19.99. I miss what we used to call the “cheap meat” section. Meat that was sold just before expiration, at a greatly reduced price. Harps occasionally has their “ Saturday Meat Sales,” but don’t expect that to be quality cuts of meat. Previous review: Watch out for sale signs that are expired. You will be charged the normal price if you don't watch closely when you are at the cash register. I had to SHOW them their sale expired a week earlier after the register kept ringing up the regular price! The employee did NOT want to remove the sale sign but I wouldn't leave until she did. WATCH CAREFULLY! UPDATE: Recently, I went to this Harps for my last time. I already mentioned the expired sales signs. Today I experienced something different that I have a hard time believing was accidental. Twice I went to buy items that were on sale - pink shelf tags. It is a challenge providing a review that captures the tension between having a friendly staff, which they have, limited variety (especially produce), elevated food prices within a struggling overall economy, and finally, the addition of the “convenience tax.” I’ve lived in the area 6 years and while I still love the people, I will more often than not, skip the convenience tax and lack of quality produce here for my trips into the “big city.”

Quaint, beer is obviously the big draw. Produce is basic but decent- not a lot of selection but it looks good. Nice meat selection.

Smaller local grocer. Has a nice variety of meat and veggies as well as a handful of gluten free items (that I did not expect to see). Peasant staff. Doesn't seem to price gouge despite the fact they are the only grocery store.
