Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries

First off, the restaurant is trying to give a nostalgic 70's era feel but it's not clean over the nostalgic looks. The food is okay for what is served. Nothing to get excited about in my opinion. But, I was really turned off by seeing the cook preparing the food over the grill with his hair swing loosely over the food! 🤢 The restaurant staff was friendly but the cooks with no hair nets are a no go to this restaurant!

The food is always delicious! The bread melts in your mouth! (We typically get the cheese steak sandwiches and tots. Everyone is ALWAYS VERY FRIENDLY. (ALL of the same can be said for all of the area Hwy 55 restaurants and we've been to several over the past 8 years. Nice atmosphere ('50s) and the prices are comparable to McDonald's combo prices, but the food, atmosphere, and people are so much more enjoyable to me.

We've been to several Hwy 55 over the years, this one was pretty disappointing overall. The service was good, very friendly and helpful wait staff. The food (shrimp platter and pimento cheeseburger, fries, tots) were hot/fresh but honestly not very good. They were served on styrofoam plates, which seemed odd given the type of restaurant. We would likely return but with lower expectations.

Every time I order takeout from Hwy 55 in Kinston, NC, I end up regretting it. You’d think after so many mistakes, they’d get it right eventually….especially since they always repeat my order back to me, as if double-checking actually means something. Today was the last straw. The woman on the phone even asked if I wanted lettuce and tomato on my sandwich. I said yes, clear as day. Of course, when I got home, there was neither lettuce nor tomato in sight. And the cheese I specifically asked to have on the side for my fries? Gone. Nowhere. It’s like my order never even mattered. What’s worse is how they treat you when you call in about it is completely dismissive, as if your business means nothing to them. Honestly, I’m beyond disappointed.

I am not a big fan of burger and shake spots but this place was great. I rank it at the top against the likes of other like competitors. All the food was great and so was the service.
