The signs drew me in as I was heading for home. “Home of the Famous Catfish Dinner,” not just on the sign out front but also painted in big letters on the building. It worked and one Medium Dinner (2 pieces of fish) later, I agree with the signs. Everything was perfectly cooked in fresh tasting oil. Corn meal mix on the fish was perfect. Hush puppies were crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, delicious, and NOT greasy. Overheard the wiatress saying the tea was too sweet for her, so I got half-cut tea and it was just about perfect. Even had small scrunchy ice! The building is functional, but I did not go in for atmosphere. The food was great. Would definitely stop again, and bring people with me.

Nice people and God bless them, but Covid ruined everything that was good about this place. The ownership is EXTREMELY in fear of getting sick. No salt, pepper shakers or condiments on table for fear of spreading covid. Also, waaaay overpriced!. Need to take out a second mortgage to afford to eat here for what has become mediocre food. Their prices reflect that of a prime steak house. They no longer serve the whole catfish which used to be their special and served fresh and hot. Their only option for catfish are the filets, which are massed cooked and sit under a warmer until ready to serve. They changed the quality of their french fries too and are now served, what I call "universal fries", the ones that every Mexican restaurants serve. Sad! If you want surperior quality with more variet

Very clean and nice. Owners are very nice and hire young teens and work with them. Workers are very nice, clean and polite. It's one of those places that personalizes services and everyone works together. They are fast. Food is great. Never had a bad experience.

Well, it’s been many years since I’ve been up there. But there was an issue on my pet little pet dog. She was on a leash and after we ate, took her for a little walk around the building and start walking up to the front and this woman not sure who she was but she was very rude because I was walking my pet. I was kinda took back. I mean we weren’t bothering anybody matter of fact we hadn’t seen anyone but I guess this person won dog lover. She told me that we’re not supposed to have dogs anywhere on the property. I said come on you’ve got houses all around you and I don’t think there was a leash law. But that’s the last time we ever ate there didn’t mean to upset anyone, but this lady really really give it to me.

Lucky are the eaters who come through the doors of Newbern’s! Grab your own seat inside this roadside eatery, and have a taste of some classic Southern staples. Their famous pond fed catfish dominates the menu. Everything is fried, yet never greasy, with the catfish being crisply coated with a flakey interior, and none of the fishlike flavour of your typical river fish. A medium plate offers three catfish fillets, a side of your choosing, hushpuppies, and slaw. Wash it all down with your choice of sweet or unsweetened tea, of course. The service is charmingly friendly, and the restaurant is efficiently family run. It’s bustling yet still casual, and as Southern as you can get! Whether you’re driving south on HWY 72, or just visiting, don’t skip out on this gem.
