My visit to the office was encouraging! I met Shirley and Ann at the Gordon Parks celebration the first weekend in October. They invited me to stop by the office downtown before leaving town. The librarian was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful to every family that came in while I was there. Their African-American bookshelf contained several binders on local families as well as books and bound documents. I will definitely be back! Thank you so much!

I went to the Center and had the most helpful person. The person helping me said that the people that work at the site do this on a volunteer basis. After reading the other reviews, I would say that it would be frustrating if I went to the location and know one was at the site. Lucky for me this was not the issue. I will need to go back to the site and I hope it will be as great as the experience I had today. The gentleman I spoke with also said that they run on donations when explaining the charges. I thought the charges = reasonable to me. I gave a little extra when I bought some items, and had copies made for me of obituaries. Bought some Cemetery booklets. My plan for the next visit, I will go to two sites if time allows. Linn and Bourbon County.

If you want info on your family from the Fort Scott area and/or on Fort Scott area itself, this is the place to go. The price is right: Free. Stop by Memorial Hall or give them a call or email. Join the Society for a nominal cost and get their amazing newsletter which gives great detail on various people and businesses. They do great work here.

My husband and I live in upstate NY and are driving through Kansas. My husband’s family is from the Uniontown area. We were excited to read about this library and delayed our travel day in order to access the library when it opened at 1:00. It never opened and the phone went unanswered. Very, very frustrating when it was our only chance to access this information. I see a previous reviewer had a similar problem. Clearly, whatever group/organization behind this “service” does not take it very seriously. Therefore, please don’t advertise regular hours if you are not committed to having someone there.

Friendly, all volunteer archive, not just of genealogy, but of Bourbon County culture and history, archaeology, geology and a number of other related subjects. Open all day every day, except Sundays, which I really like!
