We have dined here at least 6 or 7 times, always with the prix fixe menu. It has become our favorite restaurant for celebrations. Executive chef and co-owner Nick Weber is friendly and creative, and always varies the prix fixe menu on a seasonal basis. We've never been let down, and continue to be amazed at his technique with Cal-French cuisine. He's been working in this field for a long time, and his experience shows. His skills are most evident in how he prepares vegetables, always amazing, but really everything is good. The restaurant's prices have changed little over the years, which is appreciated. The service is excellent and it's always a pleasure to dine here.

This place is seriously underrated — a true hidden gem for French-inspired food done the way Europeans actually do it. Tucked into the former Carvery space, it has that effortlessly cool, casual French bistro vibe. The tasting menu is an absolute steal. I usually skip wine pairings, but not here — they’re fantastic and completely worth it. Go for the tasting menu at dinner. Hit the regular menu for lunch. The ratatouille is outstanding, and the octopus is non-negotiable. It’s refreshing to find a European-inspired spot that isn’t a Michelin-priced gimmick — just incredible food at a fair price. Walking into Populaire Modern Bistro in Costa Mesa, the first thing that caught my eye wasn’t the ambiance, the art, or even the menu—it was the chef’s duck press. That was my signal that this place meant business. Naturally, I went straight to the chef, who also happens to be the owner, and asked if he had any pasta dishes similar to a duck pasta I once had in New York. Without hesitation, he looked at me and said, “I’ll make you whatever you want.” Let me be clear: what he made wasn’t just good. My wife and I had a prix-fixe menu several months ago and were so impressed that we came back again just for that experience. Happy to report that we were not disappointed - May menu is nothing short of amazing. Took a few snapshots since as they say, pictures are worth a thousand words. The service is on par with the class of this establishment. We came on a Sunday evening and there were only a few patrons.

We had a wonderful experience at Populaire. This is our 3rd time there. We love every dish. The prefixed menu was amazing. Our waitress Elizabeth was exceptional. She even gave our friend a birthday dessert without asking. We were very impressed. This is one of the best French restaurants that we ever have been.
