Customer Reviews
I’m so glad this restaurant is here. The interior is very elegant, with comfortable seating that makes it easy to relax and enjoy your time. The manager, Nate, is incredibly friendly and accommodating. I reserved two tables ahead of time for a group of 16, and he took the time to make sure everything went smoothly, even offering great food recommendations. The service was superb. Food we ordered: Highly recommend the roast Peking duck, which comes with soup. I also really enjoyed their other soups as well. All the ladies had a wonderful time, and we never felt rushed to leave.
We had been to this restaurant a few times on weekdays for lunch. The decor was modern and service friendly. Dishes were nicely presented and we liked most of what we tried including Garlic shrimp on an iron plate, Scallion stir-fried beef, Sauteed beef with cilantro, and Hot green pepper with chicken. Their Peking duck was good, but the skin could be crispier and the wrappers didn't have the right texture and tend to stick together. We didn't like the Claypot tofu dish. It was a bit bland. Glad to have this restaurant near where we live.
We came by for their authentic Chinese dishes and particularly enjoyed their taro with pork. The roasted duck was fairly standard, but the wrap was an odd choice. The mushroom and eggplant were a good amount of spice that paired well with rice. The overall decor was nice - I enjoyed the bonsai. It can get a bit loud at times
Nicely presented dishes in upscale interior setting. Liked the string beans out of what we ordered. Solid Peking duck for NJ.
What happens when wealthy Mainlanders grow out of their wild Manhattan party days (and nights) to settle down in Jersey City? The authentic, high-quality Chinese restaurants follow suit. You go where the money is, folks. Shang Gong Chu is yet another example of this trend, opening in a haunted restaurant space that never saw much success and was most recently occupied by a place that offered Japanese-Malaysian food (wut?). While SGC has stiff competition from some top-notch Chinese restaurants within the immediate area, it quite admirably holds its own as a newcomer. Our dishes, from best to worst: - Braised Hyacinth Beans With Pounded Chili: I don't see these beans often, and they offer that wet crunch that I love so much in beans. Get this for umami legume goodness. - Pork Belly Wit
