Thompson Italian

We tried out Thompsons on a Saturday night. i had to get reservations pretty far in advance as they were already booked for even a time I wanted. We did restaurant week which was about $55 a person. I wasn’t super impressed with the cocktails but the sangria was good. The croquettes were good but needed a sauce in my opinion. We loved the citrus salad. The mushroom tortelloni are my absolute favorite. We tried a red sauce pasta on the r restaurant week menu that was just okay. I also just felt the chocolate hazelnut cake and olive oil cakes were mediocre and would likely not get again.

Great handmade pasta, cooked to al dente perfection (we had the Falls Church restaurant week menu, mushroom tortelloni, rigatoni with beef Bolognese)! Also great Friday night neighborhood vibes.

I went to Thompson Italian in Falls Church for the third time yesterday and will keep going back because the food is always so amazing and fresh, but the service my family got yesterday was the best I’ve seen at any restaurant in years. Everyone was so friendly at every step of the way, from the bartender to our waiter to other wait staff who happened to walk by us. Without us needing to ask, they brought out my 6-year-old’s meal early since they could tell she was hungry. And when I admonished my dad for trying to pay for the meal on his birthday, our waiter overheard and brought him an extra dessert on the house complete with a candle! These were just the more memorable examples of the great service from the entire team at Thompson Italian!

We started with two cocktails: the Olive Oil Martini and the Purple Rain Martini. The Olive Oil Martini was crisp, with bright notes from the citrus vodka that really stood out. The Purple Rain leaned toward a dirty martini profile, smooth, briny, and well-balanced. Both were distinct yet equally enjoyable. For appetizers, we ordered the spicy meatballs and the mozzarella carrozza, both were a hit. The carrozza had a perfect golden crunch, and it disappeared from the table almost instantly. For our mains, we tried the rigatoni, saffron linguini, and conchiglie. Each dish brought something unique to the table, but the saffron linguini stole the show for me with its rich, delicate flavor. Good pasta that’s made in house but it wasn’t obvious from the taste or texture (should be). Burrata appetizer and olive oil cake were excellent. Service was average: host not the most welcoming person, and server seemed busy (it was Sunday night, not busy) … might need more people working.
