Upjohnhouse

This is a beautiful old Italianate mansion. The location is in a historic area that is close to (walkable) central areas such as the downtown and college/university. A special shout out to Karissa on the staff who was very kind and patient with me when I was confused about how something in the room worked. Overall everyone was pleasant and helpful, the continental breakfast was delicious, and the setting totally charming. Two very small points. The rooms work for couples or a solo traveler as the soaking tub is in the bedroom (shower wand also attached) and not the space with the toilet- not sure if other rooms have different layouts. Also while the carpet is beautiful and period appropriate there are some worn spots that are hard on bare feet.

I booked through Expedia. When we got there we were told they "don't work with Expedia" and I'd need to pay again but they"could get me in the same room for the same night".... Great... Uh I didn't realize not having a place to stay was a possibility. But then I was told I'd have to pay again and contact Expedia for refund. And it's not going well. The place was a mess from how they checked us in to the room & the lack of amenities as described. There is no pool, let alone private. There is no private hot tub. 1/4 round trim was not attached in a lot of places. The toilet is in a closet with a make shift shelf for your feet & no toilet paper holder.

The toilet was put in a closet with a crappy step built up to it... There was trash around the hot tub that Expedia said was a private hot tob but it was shared. Expedia also said it had a private pool - it does not. They've got a long way to come.

Pictures don't show you that your toilet will be IN YOUR ROOM. I'm talking free standing, you're looking at it, in your room. No doors, no partition, IN YOUR ROOM... I'm writing this review because I was shocked by it. It would be hilarious if it weren't so gross. The plumber ruined this beautiful old house. I was shown every room, this isn't a fluke.

DO NOT use Expedia when booking here. Or better yet, just don't book here. I have spent over an hour trying to get my $ back after UpJohn House made me pay again upon arrival even though I had an Expedia receipt showing payment. Oh and they charged me THE EXACT same amount. I think they're trying to avoid Expedia charges but doing so puts the burdon on the guest which leads the guest to leave bad reviews.
