See Mae's review as I had nearly the same experience and she put it into words very nice. Had a reservation for Valentine's night. Showed up a little early and was not greeted. Just stood at the front trying to balance between people walking in and out as well as servers and the host walking around. The restaurant was cute but very loud and very dark (add wobbly table). I have good eyes but had a really hard time reading the menu. The waitress did not offer any suggestions until I asked, which she instead recited the menu to me. Short review: Each individual edible component we had was great, but the front of house service was not at the same level as other Michelin starred experiences. My take away feeling was “uncared for..” Full review, we arrived about 5 minutes early for our reservation but waited close to 30. There was no acknowledgment or apology, leading us to believe this is a common experience. At Vern’s there is not a receiving/sitting area so we were awkwardly in the way of servers and other customers trying to enter, exit, and eat. The ambiance in the restaurant is quite lovely, very intimate space with lots of candles; but this was immediately spoiled once we sat down. Best restaurant in Charleston. Had bar seating, Patrick was very helpful and friendly. We had the tuna crudo (10/10), sourdough (like a pizza dough dipped in escargot butter), the steak (wow) and the salad (this was exciting). Deserves a Michelin star, so good 😋

Hard place to get a reso too especially since they’ve gotten their first star but we were able to snag a 9pm reso on a Monday night. We were able to get sat a few minutes early which was nice and our server came over and gave us the run down on the menu. The restaurant itself was very chill, unpretentious, warm and very busy. Not a big dining room, only a handful of seats at the bar and an open kitchen. Hubby is celiac so our server showed us another menu with the options that he could have which was nice. Our server and the support staff were great, however we weren’t blown away by the food. Felt the quality was good but some of the flavors kind of didn’t work for us. Amazing dining experience at Vern’s. First time visiting Charleston with a friend and stumbled upon Vern’s. So happy we did - everything was delicious, the staff is super friendly and attentive, and big shout out to our server, Patrick. Patrick made our dinner feel special and he happily answered all of our questions while ordering. Highly recommend!!!
